NoDa grew out of the historic North Charlotte textile-mill district and its surrounding mill village. When the mills closed the area declined, and the revitalization that started in the 1990s reused much of what was left: mill buildings converted to new uses, and modest mill houses restored rather than replaced. That history is still legible in the street pattern and in the buildings themselves.
The result today is a genuine three-way mix — original mill-village housing, adaptive-reuse conversions, and newer condos and apartments built on infill sites. For small-job work that distinction is the whole ballgame, because what's behind the wall differs completely. A restored mill house may have narrow framing and old plaster; a converted building can have masonry or unusual structure where you'd expect studs; new infill is usually conventional drywall. - Yes. Expect a bit more time on doors, trim and anchoring — older framing and finishes rarely behave like new construction.
